I'm finally in position to start crossing cars off my bucket list. The first car I cross off will be an AW11 MR2. I fell in love with the little wedge a few years ago while on vacation in Vegas. Mr2's are rare in my area, most of the ones I see are rusted to shit.
I've found a clean one though on CL. The seller claims the car only has 52,000 miles. No picture of the odometer but the body and interior seem to back that claim up.
I emailed the seller last night. The ad is pretty vague, and there are a few red flags I'm concerned about.
First, it's written in all caps. The city it's located in is spelled wrong and the ad lists "2012" as the model year. I believe it's an 86-87, based on the rear wing. The ad says "barn find" and I can't tell if serious or just trying to be Wayne Carini. The tires look low in this pic. No mention of the transmission but it looks like a manual from the interior shots.
They were originally asking in the mid-$5s for it and it's been listed for a while. They relisted it a few days ago now at $4900.
What do you guys think?! What should I look out for besides rust?
the ad reads:
"LOOK AT THIS CAR, BARN FIND!! CLEAN AS A PIN, THIS CAR ONLY HAS 52K MILES NEED NOTHING RUNS DRIVES PERFECT.. WILL NOT FIND ONE CLEANER THE PICS SAY IT FOR THEMSELVES!!"

Seems promising, but I'd be pretty skeptical too. I love the AW11 though, they make great little autocross monsters. Good luck!

87's have different tails. This is probably an 86. Later models had side-skirts as well and a different center console.

Cool! This is the first car on my automotive bucket list, too! I guess it's kind of tied with an older Cressida and a VW Caddy, though, since all of those can be had for around the same price, but still. I'm positive that the MR2 will be the most fun out of these.

no prob. I think late models had the e-brake moved to the passenger side.

Nice! Theyre just too cool for the price. The MR layout, the pop up headlights, the awesome handling all coupled with Toyota reliability for under $5k? It's the perfect gateway car to fuel our addiction

Oh, definitely! Plus it has the all-important T-tops for picking up chicks. (or the sunroof, but that's practically the same since it's so big)

just remember that while it is reliable, its also a pretty old car now, do expect a fee hiccups. The early ones are pretty much go karts though, a ton of fun.

Of course, i dont expect it to go 100k miles without any sort of maintenance. This would be a weekend you for me though.
What's given you trouble on yours? Any deal-breakers I should look for?
